I've read Snow Country, Norwegian Wood, Idol Burning. I loved how the atmosphere in each scenes are described. I'm down for any kind of fiction so please tell me your favorite one.

I ordered Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami and I'm considering to buy the Mishima tetralogy.

    1. My absolute favorite Japanese novel that I read this year was May in the Valley of the Rainbow. It’s about a half Japanese and half Filipino boy who lives with his grandfather in the Philippines. They raise chickens for cock fighting to make money. Toshio is also the only one in his village who knows how to get to the Valley of the Rainbow, where an infamous guerilla has his home base.

The book follows 3 Mays, and is a mix of coming of age and political thriller.

I went on a huge Jun’ichiro Tanizaki binge and would recommend amolst any of his novels. ‘The Makioka sisters’ is I guess his masterpiece, but it’s kinda mellow compared with his other work. ‘Some prefer nettles’ might be more indicative of what he’s about.
