Looking for fiction books that explore the idea of humans attaching inordinate significance to meaningless items or events in order to make their lives fulfilling. An example would be someone who by all other accounts lives a normal, productive life but lives or dies (metaphorically speaking) on whether their favourite sports team is successful or not. It can be an object, event or just about anything but the central premise should be that the item receiving the attention/ worship is completely meaningless in the grand scheme of that person's life. TIA.
