    1. “The Last Watch” by J. S. Dewes is mostly serious, but has also its share of lighthearted moments

    2. Connie Willis alternates between incredible emotional writing, like I cried at most of the Oxford Time Travel Quartet, and sharp satire. (For peak funny and no big feelings, try To Say Nothing of the Dog.)

I also recommend the short story [And Then There Were N-One](https://www.uncannymagazine.com/article/and-then-there-were-n-one/) by Sarah Pinsker, a murder mystery that takes place at an interdimensional convention for Sarah Pinskers.

    3. Both A Civil Campaign and Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold have hilarious scenes.

    4. The Chronicles of St Mary’s by Jodi Taylor. Although some people consider it to be fantasy.
