Think Stephen King's popular novels Revival, Semetary. Or the tv show Breaking Bad.
Regular people or families with good lives and routines where their lives are turned epside down with something deeply disturbing happening. Themes: crime, paranormal, or horror drama.

If you’re looking for a book centered on relatable female protagonists whose lives go off the rails in deeply human ways, you should definitely check out How to Break a Girl by Amanda Sung. It focuses on three Asian Canadian immigrant women, and the story is about how each of them navigates through and recovers from all the messiness throughout their lives.
What I personally like about how the author makes everything go horribly wrong is that it’s actually not about one big catastrophic event (not always), but the slow burn of things going wrong: a father brings home his mistress to live with one protagonist and her mother; another protagonist got an ex-husband who hit n’ run, leaving her bleeding on the pavement; a main character was s*xually assaulted by her cousin when she was below the age of 10.
So yeah, I don’t know about you, but personally I do find the above mentioned deeply disturbing.
If you do decide to give it a read, let me know! I’d love to discuss 🙂
