I’m Australian so i’m looking for a book that evokes the feeling of the Deep South of the US- Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.
Maybe a country town story, preferably classic fiction or modern literary fiction. One that immerses you in the summer heat, landscape and rhythms of country America.
The only book I’ve read that matches this vibe is to kill a mockingbird but I want an even more vivid picture of life in these towns.
Recommendations??

William Faulkner if you’re looking for classic literature…the Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Sanctuary, Absalom Absalom..
It’s just a regular detective mystery but Deep South by Nevada Barr
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Maybe Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.
Also look at books by Flannery O’Connor and Eudora Welty.
I haven’t read it since 5th grade but I remember liking it quite well and I think it fits what you’re looking for – The Water Is Wide by Pat Conroy. It’s not YA, more along the lines of To Kill A Mockingbird in complexity.
All the King’s Men
