Hi all,
I have just finished The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen and am now jonesing for more.
I love books that are strongly political (I am left-leaning, if that matters), teach me about other cultures and histories, and have a deep respect for the art of literary craft. Length doesn’t matter as much as being transported into a literary experience that tickles all my senses.
Examples of books I loved:
– The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen
– My Friends by Hisham Matar
– Season of Migration to the North by Tayib Salih
– Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
– Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
– Everything by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, except for her last book (Dream Count) which I couldn’t finish
Examples of books I hated:
– Martyr! by Aveh Akbar
– A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
– The Vegetarian by Han Kang
– Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
– Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Thank you in advance!

I loved Dream Count! I wouldn’t deem it to be strong political fiction either, as it definitely leaned more toward romance compared to Americanah or her other works.
