Underwhelmed by Night Road when I read it about 10 years ago and haven’t read anything by her since. However Night Road was published in 2011 and I wonder if I should give The Women a try.
If you are familiar with her books is there a noticeable difference in her more recent books or her historical fiction? Not sure if it was the teenagers or the earnestness of the main character that irritated me but I didn’t really engage with the characters in Night Road.

The Women is INCREDIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I’ve tried reading several of her books, but personally, they all feel a bit cliché to me. I often find myself rolling my eyes while reading, so it’s just not my style. For me, it feels like a waste of time, but that’s only my opinion and I know many readers genuinely enjoy her work.
I’ve only read The Women by her, so maybe I’m not the perspective you’re looking for, but the characters all felt very one dimensional and hard to relate to, similar to your complaints. The first and second half of the book were also wildly different in terms of plot which I thought was really jarring. I probably won’t read more of her books anytime soon, but lots of people like her work, so maybe it’s worth it for you to check out her other books.
