My husband and I enjoy bonding over books he reads and then recounts to me. We call it story time. 😛 He even takes notes as he's reading, so he can bring me up to date later. I am also a reader myself but not much of a storyteller so it's him who reads and recounts. Long books or series are especially nice, because he reads much longer books much faster than me, so I can experience books I otherwise wouldn't read.
We're both fantasy/sci-fi nerds. We just finished dungeon crawler carl, and he's also recounted Worm and Ward to me. I think the reason those books worked so well for this format is because they were plot-heavy and full of fun worldbuilding details. We also did it with Game of Thrones years ago, though it was quite hard for me to keep track of all the characters secondhand and I'm not too big a fan of gritty fantasy.
