Seconding Becky Chambers for light sci-fi. T. Kingfisher is excellent for fairy tales. I always recommend Naomi Novik for fantasy, can’t really go wrong with any of her books. Katherine Addison also writes excellent fantasy. And of course Martha Wells has some excellent sci-fi and fantasy books.

The Winnowing Flame trilogy by Jen Williams (starts with The Ninth Rain), also her duology Talonsister and Titanchild

Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh – also her more recent fantasy novel, The Incandescent

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison – if you like this, she’s also written three novels featuring a side character from that universe, the first is The Witness for the Dead

The Burnished City trilogy by Davinia Evans, starts with Notorious Sorcerer

      Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill

The Green Man series by Juliet E McKenna, urban fantasy set in the English countryside, the series starts with The Green Man’s Heir

The Briar Book of the Dead by AG Slatter (basically anything she’s written, she also writes as Angela Slatter)

Chronicles of the Bitch Queen trilogy by KS Villoso, starts with The Wolf of Oren Yaro

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E Harrow – I also recommend her other books, The Once and Future Witches and Starling House

    5. NK Jemisin – her Broken Earth trilogy was really good

Nnedi Okorafor – Binti, Noor….you really can’t go wrong with any of hers. Binti has a teenage protagonist but isn’t YA

Tasha Suri’s Jasmine Throne was amazing (first in a trilogy). There is a romance plotline but it’s not the focus

    6. Nnedi Okorafor’s *Who Fears Death* series

CSE Cooney’s *Saint Death’s Daughter* series

      Amanda Downum’s Necromancer Chronicles

      Marie Brennan’s Lady Trent Memoirs

NK Jemisin’s *Broken Earth* and *Inheritance* series

      Malka Older’s Infomocracy series

Tanya Huff’s *Into the Broken Lands*

Zen Cho’s *The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected on Water*

      The Wake of the Dragon

      The Chase for Choronzon

      All excellent

I also recommend The Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart. The first book is The Crystal Cave.

I’m a big big big Andre Norton fan. Really liked Operation Time Search, The Time Traders, and Plague Ship but honestly everything I’ve read has been great.
