I’m in the mood for stories where something truly world-altering happens, not just to a few people, but to the entire fabric of society.
I don’t want to list examples, because I’d rather your imaginations run wild and you surprise me with directions I might not have thought of!
Thanks.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson
Europe in Autumn by Dave Hutchinson. And it’s sequels
The three body problem trilogy
[Nightfall](https://sites.uni.edu/morgans/astro/course/nightfall.pdf) by Isaac Asimov (short story), or by Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg (full length novel adaptation).
Recursion by Blake Crouch definitely fits the bill, if you’d like a sci-fi thriller about altered memories and alternate realities.
Start with Intervention by Julian may and read the two associated series
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and its five sequels, all by Douglas Adams.
If you’re looking for nonfiction [Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6493208) – One of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century was from an unknown and unrecognized black woman. this is what got me into non-fiction. It raises questions about ethics, medical advancements, race, gender, legacy, informed consent, and how it all fits (or doesn’t) together.
Project Hail Mary (if there is anyone who hasn’t read it at this point).
Blindness by Saramago!
Contact by Carl Sagan might fit. It’s not so much that it’s reality breaking, but the whole world comes together after discovering a message from the stars. One of my favorites.
The Last Policeman by Ben Winters and its sequels.
*Deception Point* by Dan Brown might work for you
*Dawn* by Octavia Butler
*Children of time* by Adrian Tchaikovsky
*Revelation space* by Alastair Reynolds
