Since I’ve started reading more movies just haven’t been the same, even the ones everyone seems to rave about. I’m curious which books absolutely blow away the movie or tv show in which they are based, even when the film version is highly rated?

Shawshank Redemption. I know Stephen King isn’t everyone’s yum. But this book was his second opus, after The Stand.
This might not be a popular answer, but Fight Club. I think the ending of the book was much better than the movie’s ending.
Briarpatch. The novel by Ross Thomas is far, far better than the recent miniseries.
Outlander. Books are much more rich and detailed and nuanced.
The Shining
I thought the 13 Reasons Why book was a lot better and I actually think A Song of Ice and Fire (GoT books) is better than the show even though the series is completed and who knows if it ever will be.
We Were Liars is kinda weird because I think the book was genuinely better but there are parts they added in the show that I think make the show easier to understand on some levels. I still stand by the book is better and less obvious about certain parts.
I haven’t finished watching all the shows of books I’ve read so I may have more to add later.
The Prince of Tides. Wonderful book butchered by Barbra Streisand’s movie.
The answer here is Gone Girl. The movie was excellent. The book was just better.
The Neverending Story. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie, but the book is so much more!
Starship Troopers.
Jurassic Park, Pet Sematary, and The Shining.
“Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe”. Great movie but the book is fantastic.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. You can’t capture the humor in a movie, because the writing is the humor. The plot is really just a vehicle for the clever writing.
The miniseries for I Know This Much is True was very, very good but the book was THAT good
The two most recent ones for me are MURDERBOT DIARIES and THE LONG WALK. I’m not sure the Apple TV version of Murderbot is highly rated (idk), but it’s at least getting a second season. It is so bad compared to the books. The Long Walk movie gets raved about online, and I hated it so much I long walked right out of the theater before the movie was over.
The Witcher the show is bonkers compared to the books, the divergent books – they never even finished the movies. The eragon books (that movie was insulting) wheel of time (show got canceled and it was mid overall but there were some thing that had me asking if they knew the story they were adapting)
