Hi everyone! I am a huge reader so I am usually commenting on this sub rather than posting, but I've found myself in a position where I could use some help finding the right book. I am currently a college student taking abnormal psych, and one of our assignments for the semester, intended as a cushion to our exam grades, is a memoir review. Our professor has provided us a list of suggested titles, but we are welcome to chose from off the list as well, so long as it is a first-person account of someone living with a psychological disorder of some kind.

My biggest concern about this assignment, as the title suggests, is the presence of triggering material. I lost my dad to suicide this summer and it's become an incredibly sensitive topic to me—I think someday I may find it enlightening to read about the experiences who survived suicide attempts, etc, but right now things are just way too raw. One of the suggestions on the provided list that I've been wanting to read for a long time is Girl, Interrupted, but I know that storygraph lists suicide as having a graphic presence in the book. I'm hoping someone might have a recommendation for a really good memoir on mental health without this kind of content. Essentially any other psychological disorder would be fine for me to handle, I think. I live with panic disorder which I am always compelled to learn more about, so that might be a good place to start. I'd prefer something literary as opposed to just clinical, as I am an English major and huge lover of fiction, but really I'm open to suggestions, as long as it is engaging 🙂

Thank you so much in advance!

Sociopath by Patric Gagne doesn’t have anything about suicide that I can remember. First person account of her early life with antisocial personality disorder.
