I’ve recently been going through a lot emotionally, mentally, and physically and have kind of hit a slump in reading. I’ve been rereading Harry Potter over & over again since it’s my comfort series, but I am wanting something new. I’m craving comfort, adventure, and a world to lose myself in.
Some series I enjoy to give you an idea of what “comforts” me:
-Harry Potter
-Hunger Games
-Percy Jackson (and spin offs)
– Fablehaven (and spin off)
-Gryphon Chronicles
I’m looking for either stand alone books or series that give the same kind of feeling of falling into a world like those books give. I am also open to mystery books too that aren’t graphic or too explicit.

The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia has Percy Jackson vibes. About a young Mexican woman running away from her abusive family to help a Mayan death god reclaim his throne from his treacherous brother. Fun adventure across 1920s Mexico involving gods and various mythical beings.
I wouldn’t say they’re Harry Potter or fantasy adjacent at all, but nothing gets me out of a slump faster than Taylor Jenkins Reid books – Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Atmosphere are my favs!
My go to for comfort with adventure and a world you can lose yourself in is Osmo Unknown and the Eightpenny Woods by Catherynne M Valente.
Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson it’s a 5 book series and really good. It’s a different take on the Peter Pan story.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series might be perfect for you!
It’s various storylines spanning dozens of books. A world to get completely lost in! You can do a bit of research into a reading order that you’d enjoy or you can just pick up any book, since they all work as stand alone stories as well. 🙂

So, I usually only read realistic fiction, but this year I read a book called What You Can See From Here by Mariana Leky. It’s translated from German, and it’s an overall hopeful and heartwarming story about a close-knit community in a German village. There are some magical and folklore elements, but it’s not a fantasy book.
