Katabasis by R. F. Huang
I rated it 3.25 because she managed to make a book about a trip to Hell tediously boring.
Mistborn series era 1+2 by Brandon Sanderson.
Mistborn Era 1:
5/5
Absolutely obsessed. High fantasy series with amazing world building, great character arch’s, I devoured it. No smut which is hard to come by on this day and age so to me that was a plus!
Mistborn Era 2:
4/5
More of a western/fantasy so it took me while to get properly into it especially jumping straight in from Era 1 as it’s 300+ years after Era 1. But by the time I got to the last book I was obsessed! Absolutely amazing characters, multiple pov’s.
Only recently discovered Brandon Sanderson and it’s all I have been talking about the last 2 months. My family is sick of me!
Finishing up Four Lost Cities by Annalee Newitts. If you want to learn more about non-European historical sites, it has good case studies and is digestible. If you are already a hard nerd about the sites then it probably doesnt have much new information. Was surprised by the Jared Diamond takedown in the final act
Nightmares & Dreamscapes by Stephen King. Solid 3 out of 5. As a short story collection, its hit and miss. Some stories are good, some are meh and some are a slog.
Just finished the Burke series by Vachss. I’m still shocked at the candidacy of the topic and direct language. Proper ‘yikes’. Also struggled with parts of the language (it being so fully New York and me being from otherwheres, there are moments where it losess me a little).
But overall I’m greatly impressed by the writing and how much the author can convey in so few words or by implication. Some real art in the writing here and for anyone who appreciates the skill of describing events by what *isn’t* said/written. It’s difficult to recommend more generally just due to the subject matter, requires a strong human cynicism to enjoy, but I grew to love them through the series.
Devotion by Hannah Kent. Truly stunning, like her previous novels.
I don’t really review my reads but this is a 4.5.
Two girls flee Prussia in the 1800s with their religious families and community to seek a new life in Australia. The story is the before, the long voyage over and the after. Kent’s such a good storyteller and her writing is exquisite. There’s some really detailed hardships and gloom here which you’d think would make it a difficult read but the prose is so lyrical it lifts you up and away off the page. It was slightly too long and could’ve benefitted from editing, I thought. A little touch of The Lovely Bones, too.
Dungeon Crawler Carl 2. Doomsday Scenario.
Awesome.
It was “Never flinch” by Stephen King
Boleyn Traitor by Philippa Gregory. It follows Jane Boleyn who was Anne Boleyn’s sister in law (Jane was married to Anne’s brother George). It follows her life as lady in waiting for Anne, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleeves and Katherine Howard.
I gave it 3.75* as I enjoyed it and loved the topic but it just felt quite a bit longer than it needed to be. If it was 100 pages shorter it probably would have been 4 or 4.5* for me.
