I’m going on a trip so I want to make sure whatever book I get is great and I have no problem turning the page. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a darker theme, crime, mystery or suspense but it doesn’t need to have all of it.
The Book Thief’s by Markus Zusak
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
The Secret History by Donna Tart
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
The Only one Left by Riley Sager
The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King might be a good one! A retired, listless police detective gets a note claiming to be from the man he never caught, they’re racing each other, hoping to trip each other up to the finish line. Dark, but not supernatural, and a crime drama not a horror novel. And it’s definitely suspenseful.
Haven’t read some of these picks, but Shadow of the Wind was phenomenal.
