I’m doing a research on what used to be one of the few respectable options for an unmarried or widowed genteel woman to make a living – work as a lady’s companion to a wealthier woman. Basically, a lady’s companion would provide company to a single woman friend while traveling, going about town or living together. In return she usually received a small allowance and/or room and board. We are talking 19th and early 20th century Europe.
