I want to know which books you rate 5/5, and maybe a little sentence or two about why/ what that book did for you. Here’s mine:

    1. Ham on Rye – Bukowski – his writing just suits my personality down to a tee.

    2. The Bell Jar – Sylvia Plath – I had an unexpected moment whilst reading this which felt as though she was me and I was her. She explained something so perfectly it made me feel heard.

    3. To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee – fantastic story and Atticus is, so far, my favourite fictional character.

    4. Norwegian Wood – Murakami – I heard someone describe his writing “it’s like dessert”, and I couldn’t agree more. This book in particular is, I think, my favourite book (ever, so far)

    5. The Shining – King – this book made me want to become a writer, from being a compete non reader, this was book 2 (Jim Morrison biography was 1st). This has literally changed my life forever and I owe it so much.

    6. The Death of Bunny Munroe – Cave – I’m still floored by how good this book is. Nick is just something else. Again, I think I like this because it’s a mix of what I like from both Bukowski and Murakami – gritty & poetic

John Fowles: The Magus. My all time favourite novel.

Italo Calvino: If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller. This has the best first chapter ever.

Haruki Murakami: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Robert M. Pirsig: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Notoriously hard to get in to, but very rewarding if you stick it out.

      Donna Tartt: The Secret History

      Michael Ondaatje: The English Patient

Umberto Eco: The Name of the Rose
