As the title says. I have a hankering for something with character engaging in a complex schemes against each other within some sort of formalized setting – it might be fantasy, sci-fi, historical or anything between.
I'd prefer something more focused on behind the scenes politicking and power plays than outright conflict in the style of Game of Thrones or Dune, but they are not terrible approximations of what I am looking for.

The Wolf Hall series fits this perfectly. It’s about Thomas Cromwell’s rise and fall during Henry 8th’s reign. Cromwell was common born and rose to be a favourite advisor to the king. It’s a tricky read at times but gets a lot easier when you realise that any time the writer uses ‘he’ and you’re not sure who she means, it’s Cromwell.
