Been reading a lot of dark academia novels recently, and realize it's not the 'dark' bit that interest me but the 'academia' bit. So, looking for more novels that focus on the study or research aspect of the characters lives, ones that make me want to go research what they are studying.
Loved:
- The Secret History (made me go read Ancient Greek philosophy)
- If We Were Villains (made me go reread Shakespeare)
- Possession
- The Historian
- Umberto Eco books
Edit: Please no rape or sexual violence.

Not exactly on point, but A Million Tomorrows by Kris Middaugh has an element of “time travel” that deals with consciousness and derived from real scientific theories.
Maxwell’s Demon by Steven Hall
I have read 4 from the list ( except for If we were villains). Loved all of them.
Strangely this list reminds me of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell by Susanna Clarke though it does not have much to do with academia.
The Cornish Trilogy by Robertson Davies is very much in this genre. Great books, too!
