What are some books that are a love letter to their medium/genre?
For something to count it can’t just be a great book that belongs to a particular genre. I feel like their are two rules to what I’m looking for:
- It has to play with the tropes/conventions of its form (this can be overtly self-referential or more subtle)
- It has to really show you the genuine love that author has for that genre.
Some examples I would consider love letters to their genre (not all are books, sorry) include:
- Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson is a love letter to the murder mystery novel.
- Community is a love letter to sitcoms (and also films/tv in general)
- Scream is a love letter to slashers
