I have a friend who is really in the thick of it with motherhood right now. She has two toddlers, works full time outside the home, and her husband has been deployed. She is supermom. She hasn’t read fiction in a long time and wants to get back into reading. She was a history major in college and wrote her masters on LGBTQ+ international studies programs. Her favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut for his writing style.
I’d like to get her a book that is more recent, maybe short stories or shorter chapters, and has a style like Vonnegut. Something serious, but not too heavy after an exhausting day in toddler-land. I think she might prefer a female author who understands motherhood.
This might be super specific, but I thought I’d give it a try!

I’m not sure this is quite what you’re looking for, but maybe Curtis Sittenfeld’s newest book – it’s a collection of short stories.
