Never been a ‘reader’ but I’ve always enjoyed it when I’ve forced myself to read a book, I want to get back into it again but when I look for books I’m overwhelmed by options – I don’t even know what genre I want!!

Things I’ve read in the past:
    1984 –
    Catcher in the Rye –
    Hitchhikers Guide –
    Harry Potter series –
    The Martian –
    The Hobbit –
David Goggins Can’t hurt me –
Bill Bryson (The universe and the body book)!

That’s pretty much it as an adult – no real genre!

I did try to read Lord of the Rings once but admittedly, I found it quite difficult to read and stay engaged.

I’ve seen Philip Pullman has his 3rd book out of his Book of Dust series – I was tempted with this (starting with La Belle Sauvage) but I don’t know much of this ‘world’ other than watching the Golden Compass film when I was younger. Is it a good read?

Maybe a book of exciting short stories might get me into reading regularly? Any suggestions on this?

    I like humour/thriller – I don’t like ‘scary’.

    1. i really recommend the chain by adrian mckinty! it can be a bit slow at first but pretty quickly the mystery/thrills pick up and i was gripped until the very end!

    2. Slaughter house 5

For a thriller/humour it’s not a long novel but it’s fantastic through and through

    3. Maybe give Animal Farm a try?
Otherwise I suggest checking out your local library. Get a few different things, see what you like. Use displays the librarian’s put out, ask them to suggest something popular from a few different genres. It’s a no risk way to see what genres or styles you might like to explore more of.

You need to get comfortable with that overwhelming feeling. That’s part of being a “reader,” unfortunately. The more you read the more you will be able to select books you’re more likely to enjoy. Don’t pigeon hole yourself- try lots of different things and be okay with not finishing books you don’t connect with. Use the library so you aren’t spending money on books you don’t enjoy. Not every book you pick up is going to be your perfect book – that doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. It could help you decide what you do/don’t like in books over time.

Go through the requests on this sub and look at the ones that pique your interest.

Based on what you’ve said above, I’d try Project Hail Mary or All Systems Red.

Short stories/humor: Try Spoiled Brats by Simon Rich or anything by David Sedaris. A lot of comedians have books out, so look up your favorite one and see if they have books (for example, I love Tom Pappa and Leslie Jones.)
