I’m getting some nostalgic feelings and have been thinking back to some of my favorite reads growing up.
Ella Enchanted was my favorite book for many years. I read it so often that I had entire portions memorized.
I loved Ella’s spunk and intelligence and her relationship with Prince Char which was sweet and didn’t involve the main male character being put down or degraded, and vice versa for the main female character, Ella. So equal respect is a must. The relationship was sweet and pure and I loved it (I still do).
If you want to recommend YA or children’s fantasy, I guarantee you I’ve read it and anything one might find in a listing of similar reads. I’d love to find an adult book that is comparable. I’m no longer the biggest fan of fantasy unless it’s just amazing. It would be great if I could find something comparable if possible.

You know, these two books don’t really have a ton to do with one another, but as someone who loves Ella and was recently in a reading slump (too much literary fiction, I think), I absolutely devoured Starling House. It’s not perfect like Gail Carson Levine’s, but it was addictingly readable and gave me that “okay I’ll just go to bed at 2 am and keep reading” feeling.
Ok following this cause my first thought was of enchanted forest chronicles. which I’m certain you’ve read. But I want to read books like you’re looking for
Swordheart is pretty much a perfect fit for this!
I tend very much towards fantasy reading so that’s where my recs go. I loved the relationship in Moth and Spark, both protagonists are older and very much their own people. Radiance is amazing too it’s very definitely romantasy, but again the main characters build a relationship based on mutual admiration and respect.
Can anything compare, I don’t think so. But some suggestions: Naomi Novak books. Howl’s Moving Castle. Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries.
