We have a family member who's cancer has spread and she is struggling mentally, and is a bit isolated where she lives. We're quite far, but we want to send a care package up to her with a book or two. She really loves historical books and general fiction novels.
Here's the challenge, I don't want to send books that have a whole lot of sad to them, and the only historical fiction I've read recently have been my personal favorite flavor of Super Depresso.
So reddit, what are your best not-so-sad historical and general fiction books?

One of my all-time favorites is *Aztec* by Gary Jennings. A fascinating and detailed look into the Aztec culture through fictional characters.
A second one I love, although it has real characters, is *The First Man in Rome* by Colleen McCullough. Starts prior to Julius Caesar and includes larger than life historical figures (Marius, Sulla, Cato, Pompey, etc.). Incredibly well researched and written.
