Looking for fictional books based on heavy research and immersion. Like ‘Germinal’ with French coal miners, or ‘Moby Dick’ with American whalers.

Hello! Both authors of those books I believe went and lived with and heavily researched these lifestyles and worlds and then wrote fictional books about them. I found these books to be extremely engaging and I was wondering if any one knew of similar books? Thank you!
