Fun books on history or evolution of language and words

I'm looking for some book recommendations on the history of language and words. This would be for a friend who is interested in creative writing, language, how humans communicate, etc. I'm looking for something about where words come from or how languages have evolved over time.

For example, this friend expressed excitement in finding a book that explained American slang to non-English speakers.

Bonus if the book is entertaining/humorous. Something less academic would be preferred.
