Books with broken, middle aged, male, criminal MC’s

there’s billions of them right?

but too many of them have a college-aged damsel in distress or short blonde manic pixie dream girl who comes in to “fix” him. i’ve grown exhausted bc some recommendations have authors who can’t write women or broken men properly. you can’t fix a traumatized grown man easily, and i don’t like books that try to.

i just finished Billy Summers by Stephen King. i love the main character, but no other characters. the writing style was a bit…noir? it was hard to get used to but i liked it in the end.

Billy Summers is 44, has a dark past, and is a hitman.

i’d love to read more books like that. middle aged men fighting for what they believe or/and doing morally questionable things/jobs. usually they’re ex-military or an ex-cop.

these books don’t really tend to be quite complex in their messaging, but focus more on the characters. I’d like something like that.
