I’m looking for books for my son. He’s in second grade, a very strong reader according to testing but he has a short attention span and hasn’t really fallen in love with reading yet. I’m more concerned about loving reading than challenging books.
So far, he likes some graphic novel series (Phoebe and Her Unicorn, Wings of Fire, Max and the Midnights) and short chapter books like Bad Kitty and the Magic Tree House series. Nothing is really love, though.
He likes goofy music, video games (Pokemon, Minecraft, and Mario kart), basketball, and karate. He’s caring, imaginative, and full of energy.
What will he fall in love with?

Sideways Stories from Wayside School
Choose Your Own Adventure books! Also, my 3rd grader has loved a choose-your-own series themed with Five Nights at Freddy’s. A favorite definitely!
My current 2nd grader who is a strong reader really enjoyed *Dragon Masters* last year and is reading *Wings of Fire* and *Max and the Midknights* this year.
Current 4th grader loved *Wild Robot* a year or two ago, and it’s one of the only non graphic novel books I have gotten him to read (along with *Spy School*). He is also into *Big Nate*.
They also really loved the *Redwall* series, which my husband read to them in its entirety over the course of 3 years. Redwall is now available in graphic novel format and 2nd grader was excited to get started again, now on his own.
We are also really enjoying *Encyclopedia Brown* as a family. EB especially is good because each chapter is a short little mystery and pretty much gets right to the point.
Also, the *Oregon Trail* series. It’s a choose your own adventure style that’s kinda fun. And *Time Warp Trio*.
