I teach a remedial reading and writing course at a community college. We read Flight out loud over the course of seven weeks, and it’s been largely successful—my students like the narrative voice and the time travel shenanigans, and even with groups that haven’t liked the book, we’ve managed to have productive discussions about implicit racism, sexism, and ideas like separating art from artists.
However, I’m getting pretty sick of the novel, and it’s getting harder for me to turn off my personal feelings about the author, so I’m looking for a change of pace. I’m looking for something with the same strengths as Flight—something short , accessible, and fast paced enough to hold the attention of struggling readers, while also thematically rich and mature enough to stand up to discussion.

If you’re open to reading a play, [Cake for the Queen](https://www.amazon.com/Cake-Queen-Robin-Blasberg/dp/1620887940) is a short one that has a nice underlying message about not judging things by appearances.
