Hi! I’ve always been a romance reader, but since I’m going to be an English/Lit major, I really want to broaden my reading taste and explore other genres or styles of writing.
In school, I’ve actually enjoyed the non-romance books we’ve read (even though I’d never think to pick them up myself). What I love most about romance is the yearning — and how we really get to understand the characters and what kind of people they are.
I’d love some recommendations for books that could ease me into reading outside of romance, especially ones that still have strong emotional depth or character exploration.
I would say the books I don't enjoy so much are Historical and Sci Fi. 🙁
Any suggestions for someone like me? 🙂

Take my recs with a grain of salt because I’m absolutely not a romance reader (+ I would say it kinda depends on what romances you’re reading… classics? contemporary? YA? historical? all of those?):
Silk by Alessandro Baricco (literary historical romance)
Grace Notes by Bernard MacLaverty (literary fiction; very much character focused)
White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky (classic romance… in case you usually read contemporary)
I feel like anytime anyone ask for a rec, I say this, but The Martian by Andy Weir. It’s basically one big character study, which sounds like what you are into most. It also touches on my favorite thing about Science Fiction which is humanity and what and how we deal with each other. It is about survival and what we are willing to do for each other. It is my second favorite book ever. It also has a lot of humor in it so it makes it a fun read on top of the emotion it evokes.
