What’s a good fantasy book to begin with? I’ve tried Powerless before but just couldn’t get into it.
I’m not a massive fan of dragons or fairies so I’m not sure what to look out for.
Try the first book The Last Wish, it’s a Grimm brothers retold version. It’s good and short.

My first real take with fantasy was The Farseer Trilogy. Book 1, Assassins Apprentice, grabbed me and didn’t let me go. Now starting the second trilogy in the series, which a lot of people say is better.

My favourite fantasy series is the broken earth trilogy by NK Jemisin. No dragons or fairies. Jemisin was the first author to win the Hugo award (most prestigious sci fi / fantasy award) for all three books in a trilogy, and to win it back to back three years in a row for this series. It’s phenomenal. Great characters. Epic journey. the conceit is that the earth has sentience and is trying to destroy humanity

Six of Crows was the book that got me into fantasy after my years long reading slump, maybe that’s something you can try?
