I like reading Western books that take place in Asian countries and are well written. I can see how they perceived their travels or life in another country. I've read a few books that take place in Singapore but a lot of them have romance.

Try something from William Dalrymple- he narrates his own travel stories and also just popular local folklores- can take your pick
