Hi, I’m going off-grid to Wales for a week in late November. After some suggestions which might suit that sort of escape. Open to suggestions, fiction or non-fiction. I’ve recently enjoyed Crime and Punishment, a couple of Iris Murdochs, and Grapes of Wrath. Doesn’t have to be as literature-y as those. Cheers!

    1. Read the new Danielewski! Tom’s Crossing. Loving it so far. Plenty of book to keep you occupied.

Clocks in at 829 pages so might be the only book you need to bring 😄 but I brought Edward Rutherfurd’s *London* on a recent vacation: “a 1997 historical novel that chronicles the history of the city from 54 B.C. to 1997 through the interwoven stories of several families. The epic saga follows these families through pivotal moments, from the Roman invasion to the Industrial Revolution, weaving their personal lives into the city’s grand historical narrative.” It’s excellent.

    3. Since you liked Crime and Punishment and Grapes of Wrath, you might really enjoy Stoner by John Williams — quiet, introspective, and beautifully written. It’s the perfect book for reading somewhere remote and still.

Also: A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr. It’s short, lyrical, and set in rural England — a great off-grid companion.
