Hi, everyone. This wonderful sub has helped me find great books before and I am once again hopeful.
I've recently rewatched the original Pirates of the Carribean, and I love the sense of wonder, the combination of humour and high-stakes, the earnest romance. The feeling that the movies of this time have, also like The Mummy, or The Mask of Zorro, you know? The "suspend your disbelief and come on for a ride, fall in love, see the good guys win, make it feel mythical."
I read all genres except for horror, so feel free to recommend any book that got you that feeling.
But I would be extremely grateful for any books that are of the same time period which the movies are "set in" and have elements of fantasy. I'd love the combination of adventure and romance.
Some books I've loved, across genres:
Stormlight Archive by Sanderson
Discworld Series by Pratchett
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
The Martian by Andy Weir
If We Were Villains by M.L.Rios
The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
And many more of course.
Thank you for reading, hope you have a great day!

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman
You may enjoy the works of Tim Powers, who wrote the book where the title “on stranger tides” comes from. It’s certainly not his best book though. He writes a variety of fantasy, I recommend DECLARE and THE STRESS OF HER REGARD
The Adventures of Amina Al Sarafi.
