I (grandfather aged) just finished and very much enjoyed two short novels targeted for “young adults” 1) Hatchet by Gary Paulsen about a 13 year old who has to survive alone in the Canadian wilderness. and The Call Of The Wild by Jack London about a dog that has to adapt to life as a sled dog in Alaska during the gold rush. Also, the first Sherlock Holmes novel A Study In Scarlet is shorter yet well written.
