Hi everyone. The Handmaid's Tale has been on my to-read list for quite a while. Lately I’ve been feeling pretty discouraged by the current political climate, and the themes of the book seem uncomfortably close to reality.

For those who have read it: Does the story offer any sense of hope by the end? I don’t want major spoilers — just a general sense of whether the tone ultimately leans more toward despair or resilience.

If it’s overwhelmingly bleak, I might hold off reading it for now. Thanks in advance.

I would say most of the hope lies in the follow up book The Testaments, but The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t 100% bleak in itself either. I think both books are vital reads, especially in the current political climate.

    2. It will not make you feel more encouraged about the current situation. However, if you read it and the sequel you may.

It often feels we are heading towards that type of world. There are aspects I doubt we’ll ever see (at least not exactly the way it comes out in the book) and other aspects we are already beginning to see.
