Hey, I'm looking for tragic literary romance novels.

I don't like books that are too saccharine or clichéd. For example, I liked White Nights by Dostoyevsky but they don't have to be classics. I'm open to any genre as long as the romance is an integral part of the plot.

Short stories and collections are also welcome. 😀

As a Russian, I enjoyed Anna Karenina. Quick read, romance, tragedy. Kudos for reading White Nights, it’s on my list.

    2. This is kind of out of left field but what about Us Conductors? It’s a fictional account of the dude who invented the theramin (an instrument that used electricity and it controlled by moving your hand back and forth between two poles (I think???)) There is love, struggle and it’s set in Soviet Russia so you know there’s some tragedy in there.

Another one that comes to mind is The Essex Serpent. This one is set in Victorian times (if I recall correctly?) There’s a gothic horror vibe with a side of romantic longing. Might not quite fit the bill but I really enjoyed it!
