I'm in the mood for a compelling police procedural, but I'm less interested in graphic violence and more in the detectives themselves, their flaws, their process, and the personal toll of the job.
I really enjoyed the slow-burn character depth in Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series.
Any recommendations for police novels where the investigation is gripping, but the protagonist's journey is just as important? Thank you!

The Fountain in the Forest by Tony White
Michael connely has written great stuff for his detective Harry bosch series. He is a LAPD detective who investigates homicides and navigates politics in the department. There is a great netflix series based on the books.
The Force by Don Winslow. Oh, there’s violence alright, but this isn’t Quentin Tarantino in book form. You follow a group of insanely corrupt NYPD cops. But even though they’re violent and corrupt, you… actually start to like them. But eventually, the walls start closing in on them. The criminals they’ve been stealing from are pissed. The police brass themselves are starting to put two and two together.
If you want something more epic in scale, definitely Winslow’s Border trilogy. It’s just amazing.
The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien
ed mcbain’s 87th precinct series is the best.
