Having a really strong urge to read but having trouble finding a book. I really want a series to sink into.

I'm an avid reader and I just eat books both audio books and print. My absolute favourite genre is fairy tale retellings (twelve dancing princesses and beauty and the beast being my favourites) HOWEVER I have recently read a lot of very fluffy romances. short and light and humorous and while there is nothing wrong with that normally I really want something meatier to read.

I really like the Cosmere and am working my way thorough Rivers of London with my Wife atm but I'm lacking something to read (or listen to) on my own. Just caught up with the Leveling Up series. and Risdaverse. Huge fan of the Protector of the Small series (and read all Tamora Pierce's other books) Loved all of Andy Weir's stuff. Loved the Once and Future series. Loved Ready Player One (and Two).

Not a huge fan of Narnia or His Dark Materials. Lord of the Rings is too dry for me (usually once you zoom out to army scale I lose interest and focus) Didn't really like Dune or Enders Game. Did not like Wheel of Time. Can't get into Terry Pratchet for some reason. Did NOT like ACOTR Liked the Lunar Chronicles till I reread them. Did not like Twilight though I suffered through them (Sparkly vampires I don't mind but the manufactured angst killed me). Can't Seem to get in to Patricia Briggs though I have liked other Shifter related books.

Both those lists could be much longer but they are a pleasing shape just now so I'll leave them

    So, Things I'm looking for:

    1) Longish books – They don't have to be Brandon Sanderson long but longer than a Novella

    2) REALLY engaging plot – something with some action and good character development. Political intrigue is fine if it's character focused.

    3) Likeable protagonist – Someone witty/sassy or Kind

    4) Some Humour – maybe not laugh out loud funny and certainly not a parody but SOME levity

    5) Not Depressing – I don't mind some character suffering to get to the good bits but it HAS to end happy

    Other details

Spicy is fine can be Ghost Reaper hot not mandatory though
Romance can be a thing or even the focus so long and the plot is good
YA fiction is cool (though can sometimes be too shallow)
having an audiobook option is preferred but not necessary
    please no historical fiction/romance

So can you help me with my very picky request?

    1. The Wandering Inn works for your requirement 1 beyond your expectations unless you know it already, requirement 2 after the first few chapters, 3 except for Ryoka, 4 partially though it is not really comedy, and 5 in the end, though there is some suffering, it isn’t completely hopeless.

    2. Murderbot series by Martha Wells

      Bobiverse series by Dennis Taylor

Saturn Run by John Sanford is very similar to Andy Weirs style (and out of the norm for his writing)
