I have a really hard time finding fantasy novels I like. Hell, I'm a millenial and never read Harry Potter. I find them way too far fetched and I find myself getting lost in the world building. I get annoyed at frequently referencing the glossary of terms and maps. They just don't make sense to me and I can't connect to them. But I am a reader and I want to broaden my horizons. So I would like a suggestion for a 'beginner' or more 'approachable' fantasy novel for someone who is open to changing her mind.

    1. You can look for light/literary fantasy that doesn’t focus on heavy world building.

      Here are a few –

      Elder race

      Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

      House in the cerulean sea

      Books by Neil gaiman

The Phoenix Guards by Steve Brust.

This is a fantasy tribute to The 3 Musketeers. This author loved Dumas and elves so much he talked his girlfriend into letting him pursue it as a career

    3. The Fox Wife is (I think) categorized as magical realism. Maybe start with something like that?

What are your favorite genres currently? Maybe there is something that is that plus fantasy we could recommend?

The Drawing of the Dark by Tim Powers. Unbelievable that it hasn’t been made into a movie. It’s amazing.

    6. Books in the realm of magical realism maybe? They’re not true fantasy but bring magic into it.
