*The Man Who Sold the Moon* – Robert A. Heinlein a story of the near future where political opponents and troublemakers are sent to the Lunar penal colony. It’s a one-way ticket to the future…

    2. To Sleep in a Sea of Stars – Christopher Paolini.

      Foundation – Isaac Asimov.

for fantasy: Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.

    3. Red Rising is a great series! If you want to go to some of the classics I’d recommend: Old Man’s War series, Enders Game series, Dune series. More current ones: Andy Weir’s The Martian or Project Hail Mary. Martha Wells Murderbot series is also excellent! (And a series on Apple TV now)

    4. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

    5. What kind of Sf? Hard/ more into fantasy space?

      Flowers for Algernon

      Seveneves

      Elder Race

    6. Echoing some of the same suggestions others have made – Ender’s Game is great and easy to get into. The Martian is also by Andy Weir but didn’t seem as ‘hard sci-fi’ as Project Hail Mary to me.

And OMG you have to check out the Murderbot series by Martha Wells. The books are short, super fun and get you hooked immediately.

    7. It wasn’t until I was almost 50 and during covid quarantine that I read my first sci fi book ever and prior to that I was very much a historical fiction style reader. I was an English Lit major in college – anyway! My first sci fi book ever was Dune. Blew my mind! From there I discovered Gene Wolfe’s The Book of the New Sun which is more science into fantasy. But its an incredible series.

I read *The Vanishing World* recently and liked it a lot. Essentially, it is a satire of how atomized people in modern society has become. It is funny but also quite grim. It reminds me of Black Mirror back when Black Mirror was actually good

    9. “Project Hail Mary” is my favorite but I also loved “The Fifth Season” NK Jemisin. Slow start but so worth it!

    10. I would have a look at the annual Hugo and nebula award winners and nominees. You may not enjoy everything on the lists, but you’re going to get a selection of very high-quality books from those lists.
