Looking for something to gift a 14 year old girl struggling with trauma and self harm. I don’t want it to be too on the nose that she won’t read it, but something she can kind of escape into and take her mind off of things, that still has a good lesson about things getting better, life being worth living, etc.

    Appreciate any help!

    1. This is why i read fantasy as a kid. I recommend Sabriel by Garth Nix. There are other books in the series if she’s interested.

I’d suggest *The Perks of Being a Wallflower* — it deals with heavy stuff but in a really gentle, relatable way, and it never feels preachy.

Also *Wonder* by R.J. Palacio is beautiful — it’s easy to read, full of heart, and has that message of kindness and resilience without hitting too close to home.

If you want something more escapist but still comforting, *Anne of Green Gables* or *Howl’s Moving Castle* are great picks — both have this sense of hope and imagination that can really stick with someone going through a rough time.
