I just got my library card back after decades of not having one and realized I have no idea what to read anymore. I haven’t kept up.
Looking for books with a bit of a cynical, satirical outlook. I don’t like fantasy, but I can appreciate when a book set in the real world has a touch of the outlandish or unrealistic. In the past, I’ve enjoyed Will Self, Haruki Murakami and Thomas Pynchon (not that they all strictly fit the above description).
Thoughts?

FWIW, many libraries have a bookshelf or table for New Releases (or similiar label). It’s a great place to look for new books. Likewise, many libraries have recommendations for new books on their websites.
I look at the NY Times book reviews to get ideas for new books to read. Within the past few weeks I have read **Fonseca**, and **The Original**, both of which are new novels that I heard about from NYT. (Neither are cynical or satirical, though, which I know you’re looking for).
I also check out book awards to steer me to new books that I don’t know about.
We are entering the season of “Best of 2025” lists to appear everywhere, and they can be great sources for new titles as well.
Congrats on getting your library card back. Enjoy!
For something a little more recent, check out The Overstory by Richard Powers. It has that outlandish feel with a deep, cynical outlook!
