(When I say adult I mean the rating, not smut)
I’ve read all of Wildbow’s web serials, and I’ve struggled to find anything that suits my taste quite like Worm/Ward does. They have female protagonists that I can relate to, as they feel like real people and are not gratuitous. Their experience in the story is contextualised by them being young women, but it is not the whole point.
Most stories I’ve found involving superpowers or magical abilities take place in totally unbelievable worlds, have flat characters (especially the female ones), don’t take themselves seriously enough, or just have weak/simplistic writing overall.
Preferences (for the series):
* Substantial length (3+ novels worth of content minimum)
* Young female protagonist as sole or primary POV (first-person preferred)
* Active use of powers/magic in conflict situations
* Mature tone with realistic consequences
* Deep character development and psychological complexity
* Violence and/or sexual content is fine where it serves the story

Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon is everything but the magic.
Kate Danials by Ilona Andrews might work
The problem is that everyone I would recommend for the character work is light on action or has magic that isn’t combat focused.
