I’d love some suggestions of books where you’re just squirming with the idea of things going wrong, and the book build and builds on it.
One of my favorite examples is in Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, when she thinks she will fall in love with the singer and it builds up to their meeting.
I’m also currently reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and I can see bad things on the horizon when he eventually gets to his destination.

I cant express enough my feeling of dread through The Great Alone
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry has a sequel from Miss Queenie’s perspective.” The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy” it’s just as heartbreaking as the Harold Fry book and you know the entire time that it’s a heartbreaker. I recommend.
*Annihilation* by Jeff VanderMeer fulfills this request both literally and metaphorically.
Moon of the Crusted Snow (Rice) has a stranger show up in town, and you just know it will not go well. Spoiler: >!It does not go well.!<
