I'm about 150 pages into this and it's just so….corny. The Hierarchy, The Academy, orphan prodigal child, Will (which is a bit of a ripoff of Spice from Dune). Like really you couldn't have been more creative?
I don't read much fantasy/sci fi books, but it seems pretty unoriginal. Not a huge fan of the writing and first person present tense is irritating. I don't need to know the main characters thoughts every half page.
I do want to like it and very rarely DNF books. Anyway those are my thoughts.

I’m pretty close to DNFing this and I think you’ve pushed me over the edge. Life is too short. It’s like a shit Red Rising
I’ve been super on the fence about it for this reason, half of its readers tell me it’s the best book ever, the other half tell me it’s typical YA crap, no nuance at all between the two. Maybe I’ll get it through… other means before deciding
‘Spice’ is likely a nod to opium. I always read dune as more drug cartel and less manifest destiny.
Not really seeing how will is a ripoff of spice.
It’s not great. I got caught in the hype cycle for the book and was so disappointed.
I’m reading the second book now but with much lower expectations.
Honestly there are so many more excellent sci-fi and fantasy books I’d recommend over TWotM and the Hierarchy series.
I don’t know that I agree with your spice comment, but I was really disappointed in it and dnf at about 50%
You’re being downvoted, but I felt the exact same way. The book is just so incredibly tropey. I could go on and on and on about how predictable and cliché pretty much every part of the book *except* the admittedly fantastic very last twist. But a great last 10 pages and excellent setup does not salvage a boring and tropey 640 pages leading up it.
I have examples I can give, but I would strongly recommend you not waste more of your life by finishing it. If you’re not enjoying it now, it does not get better.
I always thought that this book was a ripoff of Red Rising but this time we’ve got some Magic Fantasy Romans instead of Space Eugenics Romans.
