My niece loves the Harry Potter books etc (Potterverse?). She's 10. I'd like to get her something like Harry Potter but with a less problematic author 😂. She's already devoured the His Dark Materials novels. Any suggestions are welcome!

At 10, my kid devoured The Spiderwick Chronicles, and then went on to the Percy Jackson books.

    2. Try the Fablehaven series. My son loves this – we started reading it when he was 9, and still are going at 13 🙂

Percy Jackson Series/ Universe by Rick Riordan, Nevermore Series by Jessica Townsend, Howl’s
Moving Castle (3 books) by Diana Wynne Jones, Dragon Pearl Series by Yoon Ha Lee, Aru Shah Series by Roshani Chokshi, anything Rick Riordan Presents, A Tale of Magic Series or The Land of Stories Series by Chris Colfer, and Keeper of the Lost Cities Series by Shannon Messenger are a
      few ideas.

    4. jonathan stroud has two great series – lockwood and company and bartimaeus

eoin colfer – artemis fowl series, a teenage master criminal and faeries

trenton lee stewart – mysterious benedict society and its sequels – four unusually gifted children are brought together for an important quest. includes a challenging vocabulary and fun puzzles.

the penderwicks series by jeanne birdsall – a familiar trope – group of siblings with single parent get up to shenanigans, no sex, drugs, profanity, menace – just a fun and pleasant read

Sabriel, by Garth Nix, and it’s sequels Lirael, and Abhorsen. They’re fantasy, with great worldbuilding, and female protagonists. They deal with some pretty dark subjects, but in a young adult friendly way. And they’re fucking great! 😄

    6. The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane is great – first book is So You Want to Be A Wizard. If you want something seasonal, The Dark Is Rising books are great and the first is set near Christmas.
