For ENTERTAINMENT (meant to add to title)

More so looking for just a feel good/enjoyable book to read, not necessarily those self help, philosophical ones. Nothing against them, I just already have a list of some to check out… but if you feel like it’s absolutely a must read, go ahead

I typically like the fantasy or science fiction genre, but a lot of them seem geared towards young adults/teens or girls. If it’s good tho, it’s good, I enjoyed “children of blood and bone,” and it’s a couple books I had as a teen that I still enjoy. I’m open to other genres, that’s just typically what I lean towards. I’m a new reader, I guess you could say, and the small collection I have is a bunch of books from like 10 years ago

    1. Check out **The Blade Itself** by Joe Abercrombie, the first in his fantasy series The First Law. The audiobooks are also particularly good, if you’re into that, narrated by Steven Pacey. Dark, gritty, character-driven stories with a lot of great dialogue, dark humour, violence, and getting to know all these interesting, highly flawed, characters up close.

Another one that’s great, but a fair bit weirder, is The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, starting with

**The Gunslinger**. The first book is short, and even though I enjoyed it, it’s sort of like a prologue to the whole series, so I’d give the second book a try if you like some of the first but aren’t sure. **The Drawing of the Three**, book 2, is where the story really kicks off, full of action/violence, lots of humour, and a great cast of characters. It’s King’s epic fantasy opus, and he goes off the rails with all the weird ideas, cool world building, and connections to his other books (no need to know anything about his other stuff to read these).

Gene Wolfe’s The Book of The New Sun series, maybe? Or Ian Bank’s Culture series? I wouldn’t say any of these are ‘for girls’, lol. Of course anything by Ursuka le Guin or Ray Bradbury is great, but I guess everybody has read them already.

    3. The Fifth Season – NK Jemison (sci-fi/fantasy)

Going Postal – Terry Pratchett (fantasy/comedy)

An Unkindness of Ghosts – Rivers Solomon (sci-fi)

Alien Clay – Adrian Tchaikovsky (sci-fi)

The Left Hand of Darkness – Ursula K Le Guin (sci-fi)
