books with scene where the antagonist goes: “did you think that would work?” just after you thought the protagonist would succeed

looking for books with a specific scenario where the protagonist's plan that has been built up to that point fails, and the antagonist mocks them.

some examples I've seen include

• everything up until that point pointed to the target being a specific kind of monster, so the protagonist goes to much effort to go after presumed weaknesses, except the target was something else entirely, and now protag needs to improvise plan b quickly.
• protagonist tries their best to find and destroy the weapon in time…then they hear the mocking message…the thing they destroyed was a decoy all along.
• protagonist goes to great lengths to save a loved one, the villain mocks them, then they realize said loved one has been infected with a contagious agent and now the hero has doomed more people by taking them back.
