Literary wheelhouses (as I understand them) are things that would make you instantly pic up a book. As I understand it there’s an inverse too where there are things that would instantly make you decide to not read a book. I just learned about this and I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned more in this community. I’d love to know yours!
I think mine are
Dystopians (preferably not YA)
Japanese fiction (bonus points if there’s a cat involved)
Historical fiction about China about women (bonus points if there’s a power struggle)
Plots where a character does something really unbelievable or hard to imagine doing but the book explains the logic and how they got there. Not justifying it but just showing how someone ends up doing something unimaginable. Examples might be Crank or Yellowface.
Instant not reads:
Fantasy, romance and a combination of the two (I know I’m weird)
